American Craft Beer Week

craft beer week logoI’m a day late in my post, but yesterday began American Craft Beer Week. May 11 – 17 is a celebration to support craft breweries and the culture of craft beer. Many bars and breweries around the country are planning special events this week. If you are on Facebook, you can also sign the Declaration of Beer Independence by joining the American Craft Beer Week fan page.

Unfortunately, there are no events listed for South Carolina this week. However, for those of you in the rest of the country, take a look at the site and see what’s going on near you.

I do know that Bell’s is celebrating their South Carolina release this week. Last night there was an event in Greenville at Barley’s. Tonight is the Flying Saucer in Columbia, Wednesday it’s the Mellow Mushroom in Charleston. Thursday Bell’s will be available for sale at the Charleston Beer Exchange. I believe they’ll have several selections on tap for growler filling.

Be sure to support your local craft breweries by buying their stuff this week, and every week for that matter. There are no words of support louder than your money.

AHA Big Brew 2009 – Upstate Brewtopians video footage

The Upstate Brewtopians participated in the AHA Big Brew Day 2009 by brewing a 40-gallon batch of the Saison du Mont, a recipe from Dave Levonian. We had a great time and brewed what early indications are will be a great batch of beer. If you want a glimpse of the day, I’ve put together two videos. The first is the “official” version for the AHA YouTube video competition. It had to be under 3 minutes long, so I had to cut out some rather entertaining footage and capture the guts of the day.

Please be sure to visit the YouTube video, even if you’d rather just watch the longer Director’s Cut. They are giving away prizes, and some of the prizes are based on the number of views, so we need your support!

Asheville and Portland tie in Beer City USA poll

The results of the Beer City USA poll are out, and it has been declared a tie between Portland, OR and Asheville, NC. I think it’s pretty cool that a small, southern town has such a passionate beer community that it can compete with an entrenched stalwart such as Portland. Asheville actually led going into the final days. I guess Oregonians are big procrastinators. :P

I had the opportunity to visit Portland in the fall of 2007, and I must say that I was totally impressed with the people and the beer. There is so much competition and the bar has been set so high, it’s virtually impossible for a sub-par craft brewery to exist for long. You’ve got to bring the thunder to stick around.

At the same time, it’s exciting to see a new pocket of craft beer excellence is growing up just down the road from me. It is a rare time in our lives when we are at the cusp of something great, and we are aware of it while it’s happening. Look at Google, it toiled in obscurity for over 3 years before it exploded and took over the world. Who would have seen that coming in 1999? Not me. I was there, I remember. If I had, I would be a lot richer than I am today.

So congrats to Asheville and Portland. Both great beer towns that represent each coast well.

Cinco de Mayo 2009 beer review

For the Untamed Beer Cinco de Mayo celebration, I donned my sombrero and popped open three selections of Mexican beer. The first is Bahia (which is actually from Guatemala. I guess I should have looked a little more closely at the label.), followed by Bohemia Clasica and Dos Equis Amber.

In the video, I was entirely too kind to Bahia. It wasn’t until the beer slightly warmed that I realized how horrible this beer was. I had to put ice cubes in it to get it cold enough to stomach. It may be the worst beer I’ve ever had.

On the other hand, Bohemia Clasica may be one of the best Mexican lagers I’ve had. I enjoyed drinking it. Slight hop character, and it almost seemed a little peachy to me. Quite nice.

Dos Equis fell somewhere in between. It wasn’t nearly as bad as Bahia, but was still a bit metallic and skunky compared to the Bohemia.

Have a great Cinco de Mayo!

Asheville Brewery Tour Part II – Pisgah Brewing Company

In part two of our Asheville Brewery Tour, we had the opportunity to meet Dave Quinn from Pisgah Brewing Company after our interview with Julie from Bruisin’ Ales. We sample Pisgah’s new amber spring seasonal, which was created in support of the LEAF Festival.

I have got to make it to the Pisgah tap room soon in Black Mountain. 18 different beers on tap! I hope they have cots out back.

May 2009 – Dogfish Head Immort Ale

immort-ale
I had to bust out my old-school fitted Denver Nuggets hat in honor of their first round playoff victory. I don’t think I’ve worn this hat in 15 years.

Most of the time, when I’m looking at a restaurant menu, my eyes gravitate toward whatever on the menu has the most ingredients listed. I just love it when so many different things come together to create a complex and unique flavor. It keeps me from getting bored with food.

For instance, my favorite pizza at the Mellow Mushroom is the Mega Veggie, loaded with sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, green peppers, mushrooms, onions, black olives, tomatoes, broccoli, banana peppers, artichoke hears and feta. Is it even possible to put more stuff on a pizza before you have to call it a salad?

When I was at Bruisin’ Ales in Asheville last week, I picked up a couple bottles of Dogfish Head Immort Ale. (Whenever I’m there, I always check out the Dogfish Head they have in stock, as I can’t get it in South Carolina yet. Please come across the border soon!) I was drawn by the description: “Luscious and complex, this smooth, full bodied ale reveals interwoven notes of maple, vanilla and oak.” I was sold.

They weren’t kidding when they called this one complex. It pours a deep red with an off-white head. Smoke was immediately apparent in the aroma, followed by a subtle juniper scent (think gin).

After I tasted it, my reaction was, “Wow.” A very intense, yet smooth flavor. At first I get a lot of the smoke flavoring. (They peat-smoke the barley.) Then the flavor turns to maple syrup and juniper. At the end I get a hop bitter, oak flavor that lingers on the sides of the tongue.

The Immort Ale is 11.0% ABV, but with everything going, I never got a hot, alcohol mouthfeel. It was very pleasant with a full, sweet body. After about thirty seconds or so, I did get a nice, warm feeling in my chest.

Dogfish Head is always known for pushing the envelope of beer. The Immort Ale is no exception. They threw the kitchen sink in on this one, but it totally works. Excellent on its own, I would highly recommend having this one with a rich dish, something cheesy or oily, maybe salmon or even mac & cheese (but with good cheese, not Velveeta). It will take you to an amazing place.

interview with Julie Atallah from Bruisin’ Ales in Asheville, NC

Last week I had the great opportunity to interview Julie Atallah from Bruisin’ Ales in Asheville. We had a great time talking about how Julie and her husband Jason got into craft beer and started Bruisin’ Ales.

We also talk about the big beer event coming up in Asheville, Dogfish Head Mountain Weekend, when Sam Calagione will be in town for several events from May 15-17. There are several events going on that weekend, so you definitely need to check it out.

Julie busted out some rare and delicious samples from her store for us to taste while we chatted: Baird Shizuoka Natsumikan Ale, Pisgah Vortex I Triple IPA, and De Stuise Black Albert. Amazing stuff.

The video is about 34 minutes, so grab a beer and sit back. We had a lot of fun, and I hope you do too.

Stay tuned later this week. After our interview and sampling at the store, Julie was kind enough to take us on a little brewery tour of Asheville. We were able to talk to Dave Quinn from Pisgah Brewing, then we stopped in at Green Man, French Broad and The Wedge. I’m going to put us separate posts for each stop.

What an awesome day. Thanks again, Julie!

Anat Baron’s response to beer bloggers

Anat Baron, the director and producer of Beer Wars, posted a response to “some” beer bloggers this afternoon. As expected, this movie caused quite a passionate reaction in the beer community, some positive, some very negative.

Believe it or not, I do have quite a few interests outside of beer. I’m an avid follower of the Sports Guy, Bill Simmons. A few weeks back on his podcast, he was on a kick talking with various guests about the newpaper industry and sports coverage in general. I remember he made a comment in one discussion that with all the noise and competition for attention, many bloggers turn to flaming and extreme criticism to drive traffic to their sites.

The lesson to be learned here is that if you want to be “famous” and put yourself out there, you have to have a thick skin. I don’t have a large enough presence for people care enough to have an extremely negative view of my work (yet), but I can imagine how difficult that must be. It still bothers me when I receive any criticism, even if it isn’t a personal attack.

We all want our work to be liked and respected. At the same time, you have to love what you do, and do it for those people you know enjoy what you do and get something positive out of it. You have to embrace that and separate your self-worth from any negativity that comes your way.

And believe me, there is a lot of negativity out there, even in the beer world.
